"Humanity knows Scientology for what it is: A dangerous cult that preys upon people with false promises of power and clarity, success and wealth, love and happiness." J.S.

"For the secret Hubbardian goal of "make money" and own the world, there is the public shore story "To clear the planet". The hidden effort in Scientology boils down to silencing those that understand both how the trick is done and the enormity of the fraud being perpetrated on the public." A.L.

"And, yes, the Church of Scientology IS a cult. And I escaped it." R.L.

The Cult Test

"There is a pattern of Hubbard placing people at effect in order to convince them, that they would, then, eventually, be at cause. If some of those same people, then, eventually, became causative, then he would have to place them at effect again - because of a new "discovery" - with the promise that, now, they would be at a higher level of causation, eventually." V.

"One, two, three, four! I'm not brainwashed anymore!" S.

"Living is a pretty grim joke, but a joke just the same. The entire function of man is to survive. Not for 'what' but just to survive. I turned the thing up so it's up to me to survive in a big way. Personal immortality is only to be gained through the printed word, barred note or painted canvas or hard granite. Foolishly perhaps, but determined nonetheless, I have high hopes of smashing my name into history so violently that it will take a legendary form even if all the books are destroyed. That goal is the real goal as far as I am concerned. Things which stand too consistently in my way make me nervous. It's a pretty big job. In a hundred years Roosevelt will have been forgotten, which gives some idea of the magnitude of my attempt." L. Ron Hubbard, just after having written 'Excalibur', August 1938.

Interview question: What made you consider leaving the Church of Scientology after spending 13 years and over a hundred thousand dollars?

Answer: Over the years, each time I noticed something wrong, I explained it away to myself. I saw it as an independent incident. Let's call it a dot on a page. Each dot represented yet another time I'd notice something very wrong about the organization. One day, someone spoke to me. What they said, connected the dots. Within one hour, all my old dots had been connected and the new picture that emerged (from data and experiences I already had personally) was that the Church of Scientology was only after one's money and didn't care one fucking iota for an individual or their spiritual salvation. And that their current condition meant that no one would ever "go free" with the technology that they were using (it created cowed slaves). That the corruption was too far ingrained, that the organization could never be reformed. That was the end for me.

"The point is, THERE IS NO "TECH". RTC DOES NOT CARE about "standard tech", and it really doesn't matter. The product is a person who is hypnotized into paying more money, and has told enough of his secrets that he is trapped into staying there in case he starts to figure it out. How the auditor gets that product is really of no concern to RTC. All of these "fine points" to auditing are just a big smoke screen to add complexity and introvert you." D.S.

"Imagine a church so dangerous, you must sign a release form before you can receive its "spiritual assistance." This assistance might involve holding you against your will for an indefinite period, isolating you from friends and family, and denying you access to appropriate medical care. You will of course be billed for this treatment - assuming you survive it. If not, the release form absolves your caretakers of all responsibility for your suffering and death. Welcome to the Church of Scientology." Dr. Dave Touretzky

Brainwashing in Scientology's Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF)

Video: BBC's Panorama show "Scientology and Me" 29 minutes, aired on May 14, 2007. This video shows the paranoia by the Church of Scientology. In the beginning, CofS spokesman Tommy Davis wanted Mr. Sweeney to promise to investigate Scientology without interviewing any critics. However, when Sweeney did talk to critics, Tommy changed his story to acuse Sweeney of not doing a balanced investigation.

In the video, Tommy Davis:

  1. denies Mr. Sweeney has the right to interview critics of CofS,
  2. refuses to be open with Mr. Sweeney in his attempts to find out more about Scientology,
  3. engages in investigating Mr. Sweeney and harassing him by stalking and intimidation (and even admits his actions, smiles and nods excitedly when Mr. Sweeney points this out),
  4. repeatedly directs angry, hostile and provoking verbal-language and body-language at Mr. Sweeney, and
  5. interrupts Mr. Sweeney's investigation on numerous occasions.
In short, Tommy Davis was brilliant in showing us exactly how paranoid his Church of Scientology is. Great work, Tommy!

What judges, lawyers and governments have officially proclaimed about Scientology

"Scientology is evil; its techniques are evil; its practice is a serious threat to the community, medically, morally, and socially; and its adherents are sadly deluded and often mentally ill... (Scientology is) the world's largest organization of unqualified persons engaged in the practice of dangerous techniques which masquerade as mental therapy." -- Justice Anderson, Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia

"The government is satisfied that Scientology is socially harmful. It alienates members of families from each other and attributes squalid and disgraceful motives to all who oppose it; its authoritarian principles and practice are a potential menace to the personality and well being of those so deluded as to become followers; above all, its methods can be a serious danger to the health of those who submit to them... There is no power under existing law to prohibit the practice of Scientology; but the government has concluded that it is so objectionable that it would be right to take all steps within its power to curb its growth." -- Kenneth Robinson, British Minister of Health

"The crime committed by these defendants is of a breath and scope previously unheard of. No building, office, desk, or file was safe from their snooping and prying. No individual or organization was free from their despicable conspiratorial minds. The tools of their trade were miniature transmitters, lock picks, secret codes, forged credentials and any other device they found necessary to carry out their conspiratorial schemes." -- Federal prosecutor's memorandum to the judge urging stiff jail sentences for 9 top leaders of Scientology who had pleaded guilty to criminal charges.

"Scientology is both immoral and socially obnoxious...It is corrupt sinister and dangerous. It is corrupt because it is based on lies and deceit and has its real objective money and power for Mr. Hubbard... It is sinister because it indulges in infamous practices both to its adherents who do not toe the line unquestionably and to those who criticize it or oppose it. It is dangerous because it is out to capture people and to indoctrinate and brainwash them so they become the unquestioning captives and tools of the cult, withdrawn from ordinary thought, living, and relationships with others." -- Justice Latey, ruling in the High Court of London

"[The court record is] replete with evidence [that Scientology] is nothing in reality but a vast enterprise to extract the maximum amount of money from its adepts by pseudo scientific theories... and to exercise a kind of blackmail against persons who do not wish to continue with their sect.... The organization clearly is schizophrenic and paranoid, and this bizarre combination seems to be a reflection of its founder, L.Ron Hubbard." -- Judge Breckenridge, Los Angeles Superior Court

"In addition to violating and abusing its own members' civil rights, the organization over the years with its 'fair game' doctrine has harassed and abused those persons not in the church whom it perceives as enemies." -- Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Paul Breckenridge, June 1984, in the Gerry Armstrong case

"In January 1980, fearing a raid by law enforcement agencies, Hubbard's representatives ordered the shredding of all documents showing that Hubbard controlled Scientology organizations, finances, personnel, or the property at Gilman Hot Springs. In a two week period, approximately one million pages were shredded pursuant to this order." -- California appellate court, 2nd. district, 3rd. division, July 29, 1991, B025920 &qmp B038975, Super. Ct. No. C 420153

"It is common knowledge among senior executives of the organization and it is the policy of CSC that members of the Boards of Directors are mere figureheads, without authority or control, not for internal corporate reasons, but rather to vest control in Mr. Hubbard. I have personal knowledge that in order to carry out this corporate fraud, organizational executives have engaged in the various unethical practices including backdating phony Board minutes and forging signatures." -- Affidavit of Gerry Armstrong, former member

"When a person is subjected to coercive persuasion [as in Scientology] without his knowledge or consent ...[he may] develop serious and sometimes irreversible physical and psychiatric disorders, up to and including schizophrenia, self-mutilation, and suicide." -- California Supreme Court, United States v. Lee [455 U.S. 252,257,258 (1982)*

"The dispute in this case surrounds Lerma's acquisition and publication on the Internet of texts that the Church of Scientology considers sacred and protects heavily from unauthorized disclosure. Founded by L. Ron Hubbard, the Scientology religion attempts to explain the origin of negative spiritual forces in the world and advances techniques for improving one's own spiritual well-being. Scientologists believe that most human problems can be traced to lingering spirits of an extraterrestrial people massacred by their ruler, Xenu, over 75 million years ago. These spirits attach themselves by "clusters" to individuals in the contemporary world, causing spiritual harm and negatively influencing the lives of their hosts ". -- USD Judge Leonie Brinkema 4 Oct 96 Memorandum Opinion, RTC vs Lerma

. "...capable of such danger that the public interest demands that people should know what is going on" -- LORD DENNING

"It is an organization with medical, social and ethical practices that are dangerous and harmful," Judge Constandia Angelaki wrote in her [December 1996] ruling. "It claims to act freely so as to draw members who subsequently undergo ... brainwashing by dictated ways of thinking that limit reaction capabilities."
